Life coach is a broad title. A confident sales call can feel persuasive, so decide in advance what evidence and working conditions matter to you.
Define the goal before searching
Write down the decision, habit or development goal you want to work on. Career coaching, leadership coaching, health coaching and general life coaching require different experience. A specific goal helps you test relevance.
Ask about training and ethical accountability
Ask what training the coach completed, whether they hold a current credential and which code of ethics or complaints process applies. Verify named credentials with the issuing body.
Ask the coach to explain the process
A useful answer covers goal setting, session structure, work between sessions, review points and what the coach will do if progress stalls. Coaching should not be presented as secret knowledge.
Review scope and referral boundaries
A coach should distinguish coaching from therapy, medical care, financial advice and other regulated services. Health and wellness coaches working only in the coaching role do not diagnose or provide psychological treatment.
Read the entire commercial agreement
Confirm total price, currency, number and duration of sessions, expiry, cancellation, refunds, confidentiality and your right to end. Compare the package with pay-per-session options and never let a countdown replace due diligence.
Use the consultation as a two-way assessment
Notice whether the coach listens, asks relevant questions, explains limits and is willing to say that you may not be a fit. Avoid a conversation that consists mainly of fear, flattery and pressure.
Questions people ask before booking
Does a life coach need a licence?
Rules vary, and the title life coach is not regulated in many jurisdictions. That makes it especially important to check training, credentials, scope, ethics and the written agreement.
Is an expensive coach automatically better?
No. Price does not prove competence, fit or results. Compare evidence, experience, process, boundaries and contract terms.
Should a coach give me direct advice?
Coaching is commonly client-centred and helps you develop your own insight and actions. If you want consulting, mentoring or specialist advice, confirm that this is the service being offered and that the person is qualified for it.
