Choosing the right support

Coach or therapist: which kind of support fits your situation?

A coach generally supports self-directed goals, decisions, habits or development. A therapist is trained to assess and treat mental-health or emotional difficulties within the scope of their professional qualification. Titles and legal rules vary, so check the person's actual credentials, scope and jurisdiction rather than deciding from the label alone.

Coaching and therapy can both involve reflection and conversation, but they are not interchangeable. Your goal, level of distress, safety needs and the professional's verified scope should guide the choice.

Start with the outcome you need

Coaching may suit a defined future-focused goal such as leadership, confidence, accountability or a career decision. Therapy may be more appropriate when you want help with persistent distress, trauma, symptoms, relationships or patterns that require clinical assessment and treatment.

Look beyond the job title

The word coach is not regulated in many places, while therapist, psychologist, counsellor and psychotherapist can carry different legal meanings by jurisdiction. Ask which qualification supports the service and verify it with the relevant organisation.

Understand scope and referral

An ethical coach should explain the limits of coaching and refer when another professional is needed. A therapist should also work within their competence. If there is immediate risk, severe deterioration or a need for diagnosis or medication, seek appropriate regulated healthcare.

Compare the working agreement

Before starting, clarify goals, confidentiality, records, fees, frequency, cancellation and how either person will handle a change in needs. Coaching ethics emphasise clear roles, financial arrangements and the client's right to end the relationship.

Sometimes support can be complementary

Some people work with a therapist and a coach for different goals. This only works when roles are clear and no professional claims competence they do not have. Tell each professional about relevant concurrent support when appropriate.

Frequently asked questions

Questions people ask before booking

Can a coach treat anxiety or depression?

Coaches should not describe coaching as diagnosis or treatment unless they also hold an applicable clinical qualification and are explicitly working within that regulated role.

Is therapy only about the past?

No. Therapy can address current functioning, relationships, coping and future change as well as past experiences. The approach depends on your needs and the therapist's method.

What if I am still unsure?

Speak with an appropriately qualified healthcare professional or ask prospective providers to explain their scope. Choose the safer level of care when symptoms, risk or diagnosis are concerns.
